Church Schiedam

The St. John's Church, also known as the Grote Kerk, is a three-aisled hall church in Schiedam, built on the site of a church that had already stood in the 13th century. Construction of the current church began in 1335. During the Reformation, the originally Catholic church came into the hands of the Protestants. The church is used by the 'Protestant Community of Schiedam', which is part of the Protestant Church in the Netherlands. In 1425, the church building consisted of the current nave with the pentagonal closed high choir, the rectangular closed north or women's choir, the tower and a south choir, the predecessor of the current choir. The church was partly destroyed during the great Schiedam city fire of 1428. During the restoration, the church was expanded, including the construction of the north aisle, the current weigh house. In 1434, in memory of Liduina van Schiedam, the Liduina chapel was built against the south wall of the current nave. The interior is early Renaissance, but the pulpit dates from before the Reformation. The organ case, which dates from around 1550, was built by Hendrik Niehoff, a descendant of the famous organ-building family Niehoff.
