Peace Church

The Parish Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace or Peace Church is a Roman Catholic church between Pijnackerstraat and Van Hilligaertstraat in the southwestern corner of De Pijp in Amsterdam-Zuid. The church has been the namesake of the Peace Church Square since 2004. During this period, we developed our first electric church crown.

The need for a church building on this site arose when H.P. Berlage's Plan Zuid added many homes to this area. Initially, an auxiliary church was built on the Ceintuurbaan, which served from 1918 to 1924. After the date of the consecration of this church (25 December 1918), it was called the Stable of Bethlehem. On 13 February 1923, construction began on the new church, designed by Jos Bekkers, the son of Peter Bekkers, who was also responsible for churches as an architect. The church was consecrated on 7 August 1924 by Monsignor Callier, Bishop of Haarlem. Our Lady Queen of Peace was chosen as patron saint. Devotion to the Virgin Mary as Queen of Peace was very popular in the years during and after the First World War.
